What is Q-1 Visa: Participant in an International Cultural Exchange Program
The Q-1 visa is an international cultural exchange program. This means that to be eligible for this type of visa, you must not only have a nonimmigrant intent and meet the basic requirements of the category but also participate in an approved cultural exchange program.
The Q-1 visa is a temporary nonimmigrant visa for people who come to the United States as participants in an international cultural exchange program. It allows them to travel back and forth between their home country and the U.S., but it does not allow them to work or study in the U.S.

- Have an international cultural exchange program within the business
- Employ someone to act as a point of contact between the company and USCIS
- Organizes events with the participant to facilitate cultural exchanges
- Able to compensate the Q-1 visa holder at a similar rate to what a U.S. worker would earn in that same position

Application Process For Q-1 Visa
The process for obtaining a Q-1 visa can be tedious, but it must be initiated by the sponsor. The first step is to get permission from USCIS so that they know an employer in the United States wants to hire someone temporarily and then apply with them over at your local processing facility!
The applicant will then fill out Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker. After getting approval from USCIS, you need to submit Form DS-160(Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application). You will receive a confirmation page and code after submitting the form, which you must keep with you for your documents file. Now you can pay your application fees and schedule a visa interview. You will receive an interview confirmation letter once you have arranged the interview, which you must bring with you on the day of the interview.
Required Supporting Documents For Q-1 Visa
- Valid Passport: Issued by the government with at least six month validity periods.
- A visa application Form DS-160(Nonimmigrant Visa Application), filled in English and signed by the applicant
- One 2″x2″ photograph of passport-type, without wearing any head covering or hat. The size of this Photograph should be between 45mm to 50mm (Height x Width)
- Evidence of a valid job offer letter from USCIS-approved company/organization in USA for Q category visa holders. The Job offer letter has to be issued by the same company/organization, which will send you an I-797 Approval Notice.
- DS-160 confirmation page and code
- Receipts proving you have paid the fees
- The visa interview confirmation letter.
- Documents of your educational qualifications and previous work experience.
- Evidence of funds to cover your initial stay in the U.S(Ticket, Bank Statement, or Promissory Note)
- Proof that you intend to return to your home country after completion of the exchange program.
Processing Time and Cost For the Q-1 Visa
The whole processing time for the Q-1 visa is usually 6 to 8 weeks and the cost involved is $320. However, there are several factors that can affect this period. This depends on the workload of the U.S. Embassy where you applied, so if it takes longer than expected, contact the Embassy and wait some more. They will contact you after the processing time to let you know if your visa has been approved or not.
Employers can pay the $2,960 premium processing fee when available. USCIS will adjudicate the Q-1 petition within 15 calendar days. This means that USCIS is required to approve, issue a request for evidence or deny the visa petition within those 15 calendar days.

How long is the Q1 visa valid?
Your Q-1 visa is valid for just up to 15 months. During the time you can enter the United States and participate in any of your approved cultural exchanges, but once that year is up, you have to return to your home country.
You are only allowed to stay in the United States for a maximum of 15 months. You must return to your native country after 15 months and wait one year before applying for another Q1 visa.
Can I Bring My Dependents to the United States with a Q-1 Visa?
No. As the Q-1 visa is only to allow you to participate in a cultural exchange, and not to support your family or help you gain permanent residence, there is no provision for dependents accompanying you.
There is no provision in the Q nonimmigrant classification for a spouse or children to accompany or follow a Q-1 nonimmigrant. As a result, any spouse or children who intend to enter the United States must apply for a nonimmigrant visa on their own.
